Vista’s commitment to Women in HVAC/R Canada is consistent with who we are as a company. We support diversity in the workplace and believe that Sexism and Racism has no place in a civil society. As such when one of our own, Shelley Vallée-Ewing, our District Sales Manager for GTA West and Southwestern Ontario, approached us about starting Women in HVAC/R Canada we all rallied behind her; then later, when the opportunity came to be a premier sponsor, we jumped at the opportunity.
There is much more to this than pink logos and catch phrases. What Women in HVAC/R is doing is very important for the industry Vista serves. Beyond our commitment to diversity, Women in HVAC/R Canada is also addressing a daunting issue facing the HVAC/R industry – people or lack there of. The contractors we serve regularly tell us that their biggest problem is staffing; in particular, technical staff. Why is this? One of the primary reasons is that over 95% of technicians are male. Could you imagine if accountants, doctors, or lawyers were 95% male? Clearly, any profession or trade that only taps into half of the population to fill its ranks is going to run into staffing problems. On top of this HVAC/R contractors are also losing out on the more balanced perspective and approach a more diverse workforce can deliver.
As per their mission statement, Women in HVAC/R seeks to promote the inclusion and advancement of women in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC-R) industry in Canada. They will do this through networking, education, mentoring and professional development activities specifically dedicated to supporting women in building long-term productive careers in a thriving, essential services industry.
